For few days last week and early this week a Bohemian Waxwing was spotted, mixing with a group of Cedar Waxwing, in High Park by the allotment Gardens. I dropped by last Sunday afternoon to get a few photos as my record for Toronto County. The bird preferred to stay high among leaves of Buckthorn trees, the photos didn't turn up that good, but good enough for record shots. Also spotted a Ruddy Duck in Grenadier Pond, didn't look for any wood ducks as the lights were fading fast and the trails were quite icy.

I don't think that I have ever seen a Bohemian waxwing, nor do I have any notion of why it is called 'Bohemian'. I seriously doubt whether it is any more artistic or unconventional the any plucky Cedar waxwing. How does Grenadier Pond look? Is it frozen? I took a brief walk to the Beare wetland yesterday while my father was sleeping and was quite surprised to see that the lower pond is not only frozen, but also no more than 30% of its normal size. Most of the pond has dried up. It seemed strange and somewhat disturbing to be staring at the bottom of the pond. The upper pond looks only slightly smaller, having lost maybe 10% of its area and it too was frozen, at least for a few millimeters. The whole wetland was quiet and forlorn. Didn't see or hear a single bird, not even a chickadee. Even the hydro corridor leading up to the wetland was completely quiet. I took a few shots of the pond bottom from the top of the ridge looking down but those shots are still on the camera ... for now. Maybe I'll post them here later.

Dried-up pond bed at Beare wetland, Scarborough.

Strikes me as an alien landscape

What is left of deepest 30%

Very nice!
I've only ever seen a small group of Bohemian Waxwings over a few short days in Milton years ago (March 2013).Like yours they stayed near the top of the trees in the neighbours backyard.

Why can't you log in? Forgot your password? I think you can re-set it online or ask their help desk to reset it for you. I saw your waxwing photos - they are nice. A few years ago, I saw a group of about 200 Bohemian Waxwings near Luther Marsh area (county Road 15).
