Another cool morning with a little breeze. Mosquito menace was not nearly so bad today. Unfortunately there was not much to see bird-wise. Sightings included: Lots of female RWBBs, Cedar waxwings, Cardinals, Am. Song sparrows, WB Nuthatch x2, Merlin in flight x1, Northern flicker x2, RB woodpecker x1, House wren x 1, Blue jays x 5, Chipping sparrow and its chick, an unbelievably friendly Downy woodpecker*, Am. Goldfinch x 3, several Mourning doves, Cottontail rabbit x 2, White-tailed deer x 1 (no fawns).
*The Downy woodpecker followed me around again. Almost immediately upon arrival it flew up to me and landed on my right shoulder. I kept walking and it stayed on my shoulder while I was walking for about 10 seconds and then walked over to my left shoulder for another 7 - 8 second perch before flying to a nearby bush. I remember feeling like a pirate, ... ahrrr!
Not much to photograph but I had to trip my shutter a few times ... ahrrr me matey, I just kinda had to.

Got up for a spell at 3:30 a.m. just to have a look at the meteor shower but the street lights were too bright and my brain was too dark, so I went back to bed. Got up at 6:30 and went to a park because the temperature was a comfortable 16 degrees. I took a can of "Off" to keep the critters off me. Right off the bad I heard a Red-bellied woodpecker on the opposite side of a tree about 3 meters up, nice and close, but whenever it poked its head around the curvature of the tree trunk so that I could see it then there were leaves in the way. Rats! Then I was distracted by some delicious warbler chatter. Saw several warblers in the gloom of the understory. I couldn't make out what kind they were. I managed to get one shot at a very high and nasty ISO register and discovered that it was a juvenile Blackburnian warbler. Then I heard a woodpecker call high up. Spotted two juvenile Red-headed woodpeckers on a dead tree and way too far away as well as being against a bright white hazy sky backdrop. The worst possible scenario for getting a shot. Compensate 2 f-stops to the right and still not enough except to create chromatic fringing. I could treat that in post but the shot isn't good enough (close enough) to bother. In the same general area a catbird, probably juvenile and looking rather hung-over.

Seriously messed up juvenile Gray catbird

B&W version of juvenile Red-headed woodpecker (no chromatic fringing this way)

When the sun came out the birds went away ... mostly. Tried to shoot a Red-eyed vireo but was interrupted several times by joggers and dog walkers. Stood completely surrounded by a bush to get a Willow flycatcher. This worked out so much better than the Great Crested flycatcher that was too far away and in earlier gloom. Even post-processing won't help that shot.

Wow!~ that's is a walk worth getting up early for!
I haven't ever seen a red headed woodpecker, but my personal favourite is the second red eyed vireo.
