19 Common Loons Seen While Raptor Watching

Well maybe we were raptor waiting? Today was pretty much a washout for birds of prey at ROsetta McClain Gardens Raptor Watch..only 8 raptors. We anticipated a good day given the moring winds and sighting 19 Common Loons migrating over the lake. I was taught that generally when U see Loons in the morning it means raptors will follow. Im sure they will come eventually! I understand both Cranberry Marsh and High Park had some good birds today.

Rosetta McClain Gardens is at Kingston Rd and GlenEverest Rd in Scarborough,one light east of Kingston Rd and Birchmount. I conduct a raptor watch there from Sept 1 to Nov30,daily,weather pending.

Not to worry my friend...these slower days allow for good times with great people who always bring along interesting and informative birding stories.  I myself have learned much!!!  These days will quickly be replaced by more hectic ones, shouts of "I've got a bird here!!!" and "I've got another one over here!!!" will echo throughout the Gardens every few seconds I'm sure.

We started the rainy morning(till noon off and on) spotting 31 Common Loons,most in groups of 2 or 3,12 were in one group. We spotted one lonely Osprey.  Later in the day after things finally cleared up,we saw many thousands of Dragonflys..the sky was lousy with them. A good movement of Monarch Butterflys was also observed late in the afternoon.  Fortunately a few raptors finally came. I think Walter and I were just too tired to walk home but were  paid off(not richly) with 16 more raptors for a total of 17

Tomorrow looks like all day rain right now. Monday looks like it has a chance to be a decent day.
