Questions About Common Porcupines In Toronto

Are there any hotspots outside of Toronto?

I have never seen a porcupine in the GTA, not even as roadkill (thankfully, if they are around).

I visit a cottage north of Kingston a couple times a year, usually Fall and winter, and have seen porcupines on most trips, some times multiples. My sense is that they are common in that area, but it is 2.5 - 3 hours away from here. I am not a frequent visitor to cottage country north of Toronto (Algonquin area), but I would imagine that the habitat is good for them up there as well.

yes you are right there are tonnes of them in the Algonquin area and i myself have never seen one in the gta

That's interesting that Common Porcupines are common in the Algonquin Park Area considering the population of Fishers.  However, I found out that Common Porcupines are doing well in the Orillia Area even though there is an increase in the Fisher population.

I spotted one in a tree going up hwy 115 last fall just south of Peterborough.It was the second one I have seen in that stretch of road, once the leaves are off the trees they are a little more apparent

I've seen some porky roadkill lately around southern Dufferin county, and northern Caledon area, but I could not reliably point you towards a live one.

About 4 years ago our dog got quilled just west of Goodwood. We never saw it (she's a farm dog and was off in the bush doing her thing) but there was definitely one there, and not roadkill.

I have seen roadkilled porcupines on highway 6 north of 401, heading into Guelph...

Porcupines are found in the GTA in Durham Region, more notably in the Toronto Region Conservation Authority Tracts south of Uxbridge and the Nonquon Provincial Wildlife Area north of Port Perry.  Porcupines tend to winter in coniferous groves containing balsam fir trees. As recently as two weeks ago, a porcupine was observed in a large fir in the Nonquon area that yearly provides a wintering location for these animals.

Saw 1 at 6am in North Etobicoke today, large like soccer ball, greyish black dark color, and the eyes shined as if they were a toy you plug in, bright, scary indeed. It wiggled its way down the path and across street ... wow. In 30 yrs here we never ever saw one.

Whereabouts?  When was the last documented sighting in Toronto?
