Where to Find Owls at the Spit and High Park??

Does anybody know when owls should be taking up residence on the Leslie Street Spit for the Winter.
I was hoping to go look before the snow and ices flies. I was hoping on at least seeing the Friendly Neighboorhood Barred Owl.
Does anybody have any suggestions in finding owls??

I also saw a photograph of an owl taken in high park march 2007 does anybody have any suggestions where to look for owls in High Park??

Hi Grant,

Some are reluctant to give the location of owls and that's understandable.  I have also seen postings where exact locations are shown on a satellite map.  

I would say they (Barred, Saw Whet, Great Horned) can be found on the Spit throughout most of the winter in the woods on the north side of the road.  Check the websites and get out often.  Maybe hook up with a knowledgeable birder.
Most of all, respect the animals and enjoy yourself.

I am not exactly looking for exact locations but ideas on how to find owls myself.
I want to be a person who respects wildlife.

I guess my question is when do the owls start to arrive on the spit.
I was out in Feb but I wanted to know is when do the owls arrive and would they be out there now.

Best piece of advice I can give you is to look up the type of habitat that the different owls utilise, and then seek out similar habitat on the Spit.  I know it sounds time consuming, but it makes the reward of finding them that much more special.

The owls will arrive when the weather cools down - so unless you're a weatherman, you'll just have to wait for the rest of us.    With that being said, there are always travellers stopping by on their journey south.

Hi this is just my 2 cents.

 I and others I no won’t give out wear we find Owls out on the spit!! And why photo hogs have already spoiled that for you all! With the braking of tree branches and the harassment of birds with flash‘s and encroachment…

But what I will say is the birds are probly their right now , BUT with the lack of food in southern Ont this year I wood think they wont stay around ……

Sad but true . :cry:

Please I was not asking for specifics but just general guidelines. I was wondering when the owls began to arrive at the spit. I wanted to learn some fieldCraft so I could find owls myself. I was not looking for GPS co-ordinates. There are always bad apples that ruin it for other people but most people think seeing an owl is a rare and wonderful experience and I think education is the key to getting people to respect wildlife. I was just looking for information like try behind the grenadier restraurant or the north east corner of high park or even look in the pine trees along the north side of the road on the spit or even owls prefer evergreen trees near open fields. If somebody does not want to tell me about something then thats fine but I hope we can all still be friends.

as I did say in my last post "  the birds are probly their right now " !! if you reed Ontbirds thay have bin banding them for
over a week now upnorth ...

I hope to go out looking this weekend ( not out on the spit ) but in my new nabour hood ...  :wink:
