A friend living in Long Island invited me to visit and go birding with her this week. We went to Jamaica Bay and saw Little Blue Herons, Glossy Ibis, a pair of Osprey on a nest, Snowy and Great Egrets, Yellow and Black-Crowned Night Herons, Laughing and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, American Oystercatchers, Willets, Common and Forster's Terns, Mockers, Grey Catbirds, House Wrens, E. Towhee, Brown Thrashers. The best sighting was a Fulvous Whistling-Duck! We had long, great views of the bird. This duck's hasn't been seen in the area for 40 years.
The next day we went to Breezy Point. We saw a Fish Crow, Black Skimmers, Least Terns, Semi-Palmated Plovers, Dunlins, Sanderlings, and Greater Black-backed Gulls. The best sighting was nesting Piping Plovers. We saw the birds running on the beach, where their colouring really blended in. We watched one bird settle on its nest.
For those who feel like a road trip, here is a site that gives directions, times, and permit fees for those areas.
