This little guy came to visit our Purple martin house on a cold day. I am surprised he could even fit through the holes. This is about 30 feet from the kitchen window. My son noticed him poking his head out in the late afternoon. He stayed around for a few hours, and came out at dark and sat on the corner for about an hour before leaving (see 2nd photo- maybe I should have used the red eye reduction??). He was back in the martin house again a few days later. I suppose he was looking for a warm spot? Is this an eastern screech owl?

A bad day birding is better than a good day at work!!

cool photos - yes, it is a screech owl

I have built nest boxes for them, plans call for 3" holes.  Your martin house holes look pretty big.

Beauty, this is the one species of owl I have never seen. Awesome owl in your yard let alone any owl species.
