Wild turkey, Chine Drive/Kingston Road in Scarborough

I have a dog walking client just north of Kingston Road, off Chine Drive.  Last week, when we had a dusting of snow, I noticed huge bird footprints on the driveway, assumed they were crows, and forgot about them.

Today, I went to let the dog out and what do I see but a wild turkey!  It was walking between my client's house and the neighbour's.  I sent him an email (the client, not the turkey) and asked if he'd seen it before and he said it's been in the area for about 6 months.  I didn't want the dog to annoy it, he's a 4 month old Lab puppy and is in the "interested in everything" stage, so I went to the window in the back room to take a look.  The turkey was in the backyard.  I finally took the puppy to the front yard and he peed quickly, and was dragged back into the house even quicker.  Last I saw, the turkey was between the next two houses.

This is the first one I've seen in Scarborough.  We see them often in Cranberry Marsh, so this took me by surprise.

Hi Lee,

Could you please point that Turkey in the direction of Rosetta McClain Gardens, BIGFRANK and I will be waiting to count it as the 180th bird species ID'd at the park.  Wouldn't that be funny, the looks we'd get when we inform our friends at the park that we've seen a Wild Turkey and not a Turkey Vulture for a change?

Strange that its solo particularly in the winter...look up in the evenings and you might find him roosting...they're surprising tough to spot in the trees...the other thing that cracks me up about them is how umm...dumb they seem to be yet...tough to hunt...(so I'm told)...

We have tons of them where I live (Ayton -- half hour south of Owen Sound) but I never tire of seeing them...often they will congregate in flocks numberig several hundred in corn fields...

They are the bane of famers because they will attack manure piles as a flock...

Closest I've seen them in an urban setting is on the northeast corner of Mississauga Road / King St. in Caledon...

I don't live in that neighbourhood so I doubt I'll see one in a tree.  It was shock enough to see one at all!  I've been walking the dog twice a day for about 4 weeks now and have only seen him once, although you can bet I look for him all the time now.
