Siskins and Redpolls easy to tame

For the second time in a week I have been able to have a pine siskin sit on my finger and this morning I was able to coax a lovely male redpoll to do the same!

Our feeders are on our deck near to the back door and since the siskin arrival mid January I have been able to acclimatize some of them to my comings and goings from house to studio.  They started by just flying up into the grapevine above the feeders while I "crept" past them to the door, then a few of them would remain on the tube and perch feeders watching me as I went by.

Last week I stood by the feeder and was able to reach out and "lift" a siskin off the tube onto my finger - and as long as I kept it close to the tube so it could keep eating it was quite happy to perch. :-)

Today I did the same with a siskin and when it finally flew off into the vine I switched arms and lifted the redpoll off his perch as well.  It is quite something to have these lovely little birds less than an foot from my face.

Unfortunately, no one is home to take a picture of me with the birds, I did get a shot on the wknd of my hubby standing holding the feeder with siskins hanging off it.

...he calls me the "bird whisperer" LOL

THat is totally awesome. I know when I fill my feeders the chickadees get quite excited and come close to see if I'm finished yet. THink they can tell me apart from my two border collies who try continually to herd the birds to no avail. I should try to spend more time out there without the dogs.
