East Scarborough: Crossbills

I have "lurked" and finally decided to jump in with a post.

For some time now I have been looking for the White Winged Crossbills my wife told me she had seen in profusion, in the Markham/Brimorton area.
Well, this morning I saw two, dining on a neighbour's front lawn.  I just hope the neighbour's cat doesn't end up dining on them!  

Photos turned out terrible.  I now realize my camera was probably still set to 'macro' mode, so it didn't focus.  Either that, or it was just too cold!

While out for a nature walk and birding this morning, I couldn't focus my binoculars - the wheel seemed to be frozen, along with my eyelashes!   :shock:  Cripes!

Wifey saw a flock of them, and took some time to ID them.  I have only seen the pair, so far, but lots of evidence of the larger numbers of them, from the litter of cones that they created!

Either that, or it was just too cold!

I was trying to watch a hawk at the apartment buildings at Eglinton and Markham yesterday and the heat from my eyes kept fogging up the binoculars!  I guess that's what happens when you have the binoculars in the car all the time.

My best friend used to live on Chestermere Blvd so I visited the Markham/Eglinton area a LOT back in the mid to late 80's!   Meanwhile, I was living at Kipling/Eglinton in Etobicoke so it was quite a travel by bus and subway!   Ironically, we both now live in Mississauga walking distance from each other.  :lol:

I was at Markham and Ellesmere in the plaza, when I had a Peregrine buzz overhead at about 10'.  Strangely, I thought it was not so odd to see one, except this one had jesses!
I called around, and I think the owner was tracked down and retrieved his bird... it had become a bit overzealous in following the pigeons, and "wandered off"...
