Woodpeckers

I have a friend, a casual birder at best, who very much wants to see a Pileated Woodpecker.
My question is: do woodpeckers, and in particular Pileateds, respond to tape playback as readily as many other types of birds?
I realise these birds have a huge territory and luck plays a big part in seeing them. I have been out a couple of times with my friend in areas where a pair of Pileateds are known to be, but never had so much as a whisper.

Thanks in advance

Hi Brendan.

No idea re: tape playback but I heard then saw a Pileated Woodpecker at Riverwood Park on Saturday afternoon, in the woods close to the large parking lot just to the right of Chappell House.

My mom saw 2 Pileated Woodpeckers by the pond (East side of trail, just South of Burnhamthorpe) at Erindale Park last week.

Other location:  Haven't heard or seen any at Rattray Marsh for a long time.  Used to see them there all the time.

You could also try Earl Bales park. Entrance off of Bathurst north of Wilson. I found a mating pair in there.
