hi

My partner briefly saw a wren perched on the fence in our east end TO backyard today. No pic, sorry, and too brief a glimpse to see much more than the short tail and chubby outline. Would it most likely be a winter wren?

Which wrens, if any, can be found in the city through the summer months? And are Carolina wrens common here yet?

Well, that exhausts the wren questions du jour.... thanks!

Hi Julie,

Not sure if you're anywhere near the Scarborough Bluffs or not but at Rosetta McClain Gardens there has been a Carolina Wren since the beginning of January.  It sings away every morning looking for a friend.  Actually, I recorded a Carolina calling out in the exact same area back in August of last year, I don't know if it was the same bird but, I'm thinking it is, it probably stayed the whole winter.  Don't know if that's normal though.

Both Winter and Carolina Wrens winter in the GTA.

Winter Wrens in small numbers. I had one in Markham during the Rouge River Winter bird count this January. Another 10-14 days there should be alot more around.

Carolina Wrens are year round residents in Scarborough. There are several pairs in the lower Highland Creek area.

House, Marsh and Sedge Wren do not over winter in Ontario. Marsh and House do try occasionally.
