April 1st, 2009

My name is Merrie Whitmore, and I am one of the Community Outreach Associates with this year’s Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, North America's largest documentary festival, which runs from April 30 to May 10, 2009.

This year we are proud to present Ghost Bird, which we thought would be of particular interest to your members as it deals with the controversy surrounding sightings of the ivory-billed woodpecker.

Please let them know about Ghost Bird, daytime screenings are free for students and seniors. And if you would like more materials or information we’d be happy to put something together for you. If you can think of a better way to reach the Toronto birding community, I welcome your suggestions.

Ghost Bird

D: Scott Crocker / 85 min / USA / English

In 2005, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, long thought extinct, was incredibly rediscovered in Arkansas, sparking much debate between skeptics and believers, ornithologists and birders, realists and idealists. Ghost Bird searches for a bird and finds a zeitgeist.

Hmmm. my 1st thought about a "Ivory Bill" posting on April 1 was "is this another joke?".

Looks legit tho.

lol...I had that thought (April Fools !) when I saw the price of admission and the times....wasn't a pretty short clip..and didn't it make the rounds over the internet? I saw a clip taken from that area from a few years back...or was there a lot more to the film ?

Sounds great. Tickets are still available. I just bought one.

The film was covered in a recent episode of Birdwatch Radio Podcast (Program #19 - March 17, 2009)
