Northern Goshawks

We have a pair of Northern Goshawks nesting in the woods behind our home. This is the first year we have seen both the male and female. The nest is at the very top of one of the many swamp maples in the forest and is easily seen from our deck. We are not looking forward to the leaves coming out on the trees as our excellent visibility will be blocked!

When hunting,  these hawks are extremely patient and will sit for hours in order to catch their prey. We have seen them swooping down to catch rabbits and squirrels as well as numerous  birds. Unfortunately our bird population at the bird feeder has diminished.

We are looking forward to seeing some young in the near future.

Welcome to the forum and nice sighting!  I haven't even seen a goshawk before, and to see them hunt and nest within the view of your deck must be incredible!

It was difficult determining the species. Originally we thought it was a red tailed hawk but once we were able to get close enough with the binoculars, (they sometimes sit on a fallen tree and it appears they are staring at us!) the markings were definitely that of a goshawk.

We have also sighted them in the winter sitting on our bird bath, They don't seem to be afraid of getting close to the house.

Will post any further activity as it occurs.

Nice find. I've recently found the same. Careful of getting too close to that nest. Extremely aggressive birds and they let you know if you're too close.
