I am posting this because of what I have seen or not seen.....

I have been away for two weeks upon my return I am surprised to see no Red winged Black birds. Grackles tonight were  massing,  a few hundred flew

North west over my house, have not seen that before. Cedar Waxwings are gone (I was surprised at finding some a few houses down this past January).

At  my favourite pond there are no Swallows remaining (it might be because we had  a few really cool Nights)

Song sparrows, chirpies, chickadees, Cardinals and Doves  remain for now and there are a whole lot of American Gold finches singing away in the trees

around my house. Robins are somewhat scarce,I find that a little weird because just a few days ago I spotted many along the trans canada highway a  12

hour drive  North West of here. It is actually warmer in the central part of Canada than it is here right now..

Good morning Napper

The birds that you are missing like the Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles, Cedar Waxwings, and Robins are not gone yet. Most of them disappear from the breeding areas by 1st of August or so and end up in sometimes huge flocks in fields north of the city or marshes. In October if you are in the right place like High Parks Hawk Hll or base of Leslie St. Spit in the am you may see many thousands of these birds (including Bluebirds) as they start their migration and if you go to Long Point in late October through November you could encounter up to 100,000 Blackbirds including Rusty, Red-winged, Grackles, and Cowbirds in the and around the marshes.

As far as the Swallows go there are already hundreds of them at the Leslie St. Spit as they prepare for their migration and they start to gather along the Lake Erie North Shore in their 10's of thousands now before they migrate at the end of the month and into September and Waxwings also gather in flocks prior to migration even though some stay the winter.

You have noticed the Goldfinches singing,. This is their nesting time. The Leslie St. Spit yesterday had 30+ Goldfinches there, singing, displaying and gathering nesting material.

Hope this clears up the missing birds mystery.

Thanx for the info.. Mr Murr

I may have been a bit premature regarding the departure (from my area at least)  of  Barn Swallows. I did see a few this Evening at the pond I like to visit.

I take my children over there and point out the birds of interest if there are any.  Personally I think they like going because we find golf balls in the mud from

the Course accross the little pond.
