This weekend my friend Keith and I set a goal count of 75 visual birds species on the Lake Huron side including part of Bruce Peninsula to Isaac Lake. Weather for what it was, didn’t allow us to get to that number, however we did total 56. Man . . . it was brutal today being Sunday. Besides the usual suspects, we did encounter a Bald Eagle (flew over and settled on a rock), 4 Great Egrets, several Dunlins some Least Sandpipers, two Semipalmated Plovers. These at Marimachi Bay. The 3 nesting Piping Plovers in Sauble are being well guarded by volunteers. (if anyone has the time they really need more of you) Last year these litt’l ones died by goodness knows what. A very disappointing Isaac Lake trip on Sunday produced very little and we came away with a few warblers: Blackpoll, Yellow-Rumped, Mourning, Yellow, American Redstart, Common Yellow-Throated. Even the Tree Swallows didn’t want to venture out of their boxes, it was that cold and windy. After having breakfast in Mar at Renee’s restaurant we decided to add to our bird count for a sure bet . . . Oliphant! There we will definitely find our usual Osprey nest on the designated platform. And the true trooper that this bird is, she has produced an offspring. Sad to tell you that the platform at Isaac lake is no longer there and the Rankin River portage’s platform is vacated also, although I did see a sign of life a few weeks ago. Perhaps the offspring has already fledged. BTW Kincardine lagoons was alo a bust. Oh well that’t birding for you.
