Osprey in Peterborough

While taking the family to the Peterborough Zoo this afternoon I had the opportunity to watch an Osprey in action.  We were on the zoo side of the river and on the other was an Osprey that was valiantly trying to hunt and fend off another smaller bird who was defending its territory.  The day did not go to the Osprey as it came up empty on four dives and was driven off after about five minutes by the smaller bird.  I got some shots but the distance was a bit much for my little 210mm and I forgot I was on B&W mode...  doh!

just a side note - i make the same mistake you make i.e. leaving home without looking at my camera settings.
i missed some amazing pictures of a friendly cardinal because i had the ISO set to 1200!!

trying to get into the habit of changing the settings before leaving the house.

Tom ... I used to visit Riverview Park and Zoo fairly often many years ago.  A really great, fun and interesting place!

Is it still free admission and free parking?  Did you and your family go for a ride on the train?  Is the pond still there?

To YogiStewart,

I had been flipping between colour and B&W several times during the day trying for some artistic shots and I just got excited and forgot to check which mode I was in.

To Bird Brain,

Yes, its free entry and parking.  Yes, we rode the train.  Don't know about a pond.  There is a little water park there now so that may have taken its place.  There have traditionally been a fish feeding station on the river but the feed machine wasn't there.  Maybe just isn't up yet.

There is an active nest on the London st. Dam which is just south of the zoo and another nest at the Riverside Ball Park which is just south of the Hunter St. bridge. Here is a link to some shots I managed back in early June.
