ID Help Please

This morning from 7-9am there were many wee warblers,vireos and flucatchers,passing along the top of the Scarborough Bluffs. I stink at fall warblers and anything else thats all yellow,white and black. Armed with a new digital camera(3rd day of use)...be afraid be very afraid...I got shots of these 2 birds and have little clue what they are.(one photo,one a link to a photo) While I have an idea of the 2nd one,Id rather leave speculation to you so as not to influence anyone. The first one looks like either a Blue-winged or a Tennessee Warbler.  The lighting makes it tough to judge the colours.

The other one appears to be one of the Empidonax flycatchers.

Your second shot kinda looks like a Least Flycatcher but I can't see the front of the bird.

Big eye ring (white eye ring) and little  grey along the sides of the breast. Whitish wing bars qty 2.

The one I imaged was the size of a Chickadee or slightly smaller...

I only know this because I asked an expert a few weeks ago your bird looks the similar.


As for the Wobler  I won't go there.. (yeah I know Warbler)


So BIGFRANK what kind of set-up are you using?  Camera that its.

A friend and I conferred and our most humble opinions are that #1 is a Pine Warbler and #2 is a Least Flycatcher. Standing to be corrected on one or both,I do appreciate everyones help.
  The new camera is a Canon S2 IS. Eventually  I will almost learn what Im doing with it.

I took a picture of a bird similar to this and asked for help to identify and someone suggested that it's a red eyed vireo.

the warbler is a bay-breasted warbler.

TEWA has no wing bars.
BWWA has a vermivora bill.

if you look closely at the bird, you will notice the muted "bay" running down the flanks.


the flycatcher is most likely a LEFL.

Okay, on second thought Tennessee is unlikely:  They can show wing bars at this time of year, but not that prominently, and without that much contrast between the wing & body colour.

Pine, Bay-breasted and Blackpoll are also contenders.  I wouldn't put too much faith in the colours.  There appears to be a fair amount of chromatic abberration.  ( I doubt there is really pink in primaries or in theat twig.)

I wouldn't try to make a positive ID from that photo, but my bet would be Bay-Breasted.

it's a bay-breasted.  

"chromatic abberration" or not, there IS a brownish colour there.  PIWA and BLPW would not have that colour there.  there would only be yellow and white.   nothing "darker" than the yellow and white, as you can see on this bird.  

BLPW has yellow-grey legs.  this bird does not.

PIWA and BLPW will typically have some streaking along the sides.  this bird does not.

again, it's a BBWA.

I'm not sure how comfortable I am agreeing with someone with the handle of "cloaca" but his/her ID efforts are accurate for both of BigFrank's photos. Keep them coming Frank, aren't fall warblers fun? BG
