Here's another pic of the great horned owl.



Here's a green heron silhouette



And lastly here are a couple pics of some type of bittern or heron taken at 8:30pm.  That extra f stop or two sure would have helped.

I would guess yes but i'm really unsure how to tell the two apart.  I have seen a number of green herons on this swamp so it might be a bunch of new birds.

After reading my above reply i wondered what the hell i was talking about.  I thought you were asking if the green heron was a juvenile.
But yes it is a Juvenile Black Crowned Night Heron as Soaring Hawk so kindly identified in the Bird ID section.

Wow, the 3rd image is excellent, love the reflection. Silhouette is a BCNH, nice POV.

That silouette is CRAZY!!! Wow.  Did it take you long to get into the right position to be able to take that picture?  Or, was it more of the right place at the right time?

Crazy, crazy good.  One of my faves on this board, so far!

I was out trying to get pics of the GHO and that heron just happened to fly up in the tree above me.  I tried and tried to get a good exposure of the bird but there wasn't enough light so i opted for the silhouette after seeing a couple shots turn out dark.

Hey JTF here is the same bird in the silhouette earlier when i had a little more light and of course i bumped up the shadows and highlights in Adobe.



Is that a BCNH?

I thought i was only seeing green herons on this swamp

That is a Green Heron. Not surprisingly, you're seeing more Green Heron's during the day. The N in BCNH does stand for "Night".

ok so I know the red eye effect is supposed to be taboo, but I love the last photo...it looks like a baby demon bird!!!
The reflection of it with the same effect looks like it should be the cover for the next stephen king novel; Brilliant!

I actually tried red eye reduction but i guess it doesn't work well on birds.  You can see  that the reflection actually still has the red in it.

gorgeous pics! i tried getting some pictures and realized they were all bad and my flash had gone off (making the eye yellowish?) the new camera removes red-eye but not yellow eye !!
i have since learned to take the evening pictures with out the flash and believe it or not they come out half decent.
