this is probably the closest I've ever been to a kingfisher.

nope. the Brickworks.
its been relatively quiet on my 3 visits there over the past week, but i've had 30 seconds of brilliance. the waxwing eating a berry, the kingfisher chilling on the rail and the juvie BCNH flying away.
