2 weeks ago we say a humming bird in our back yard, 1s time ever here .. however I did witness one up close in my friends backyard several years ago in Oakville.

I live in South Mississauga and get one every year who practically lives at my feeder. He has no interest in the multitude (and costly) abundance of plantes I have planted for him. He just sits at my feeder for about 10 minutes every hour and drinks the sugar water I put out.

I have heard of many sightings in Mississ & oakville however was really surprised seeing one here.  Truly an amazing bird.

I've had hummers visiting my feeders since the spring - they are a delight to have around  !!
I have scarlet runner decorative beans growing up my garage wall and over a alcove at the back of my house and the hummers seem to prefer the red flowers more than any of the other attractant plants . One youngster is particularly inquisitive and will fly up to a meter from me and hover for a looksee.

We occasionally get hummingbirds in our downtown backyard (Gerrard and Broadview). We had one visit repeatedly a few weeks ago.

This year I was given a wonderful red glass bulb hummingbird feeder from Pier 1... NOT ONE hummingbird came a courting... I have taken the thing in and will do some research to see what might have gone wrong.

Past years I have bought pink geranium (really pelargoniums) hanging baskets and much to my shock had several visits!

Guess what I am getting again next year!

I can completly understand what you are saying here Observer.
For many years all I had was a $9.99 Canadian Tire special and always had  just a couple of Hummers.
So a few years ago I purchased a beautiful hand blown feeder in Mexico and was so excited come spring. I pictured a dozen hummers fighting for a feeding spot.
Well can I tell you that my one regular guy came back all the time  would refuse to use it. He would just sit on my fence and look at it, do a few buzz arounds and then leave. So out came the Canadian Tire tried and true. I hung both of them up and sure enough the Canadian Tire stole the show. Not once did they use my "fancy one". They both had the same concentration in them...no different.
I have no explanation for it.  I don't think you have done anything wrong I just think your Hummers do not require the finer things in life. Maybe plain and simple will work.

The imagined visual of the hummingbird's perplexed disdain brings on a smile! Looks like geraniums or a visit to Canadian Tire for next year! Thanks!
