Hi all,

During this morning's Raptor Watch BIGFRANK and I focused our binoculars on a big black hawk-like bird that came flying over the trees and over the centre of the park.  Both of us were desperately running through the likely possibilities in our heads trying to come up with something before it flew out of view.  Luckily for us the bird flew to the west end of the park and was greeted by the local crows so it turned around and gave us an even better view as it flew back over us.  When Frank and I first saw it we both thought that maybe it was a very "dark-morphed" hawk or even a Black Vulture...I also thought that maybe it was a Black Hawk far far out of it's range.  As it turned away from the crows, Frank called out "Common Raven" which by that time made perfect sense as it was an "all black" bird much like a crow is.  The funny thing is that approximately 30 minutes earlier I was telling Frank about how I'd never seen a Common Raven in Ontario before, only at the Tower of London in England, he told me that he's only seen them over the park once in the past six years of birding there and that those birds were very high in the sky.

This sighting was way too cool for us but probably not for you folks in the north eh? - lol!!!

Tomorrow morning I think I'll talk about how I've never seen an Ivory-billed Woodpecker in Ontario!!!

Common Ravens attempted to breed In the Rouge Park near the zoo this spring. I think it was the first time in 80 years pure raven tried to breed in the city of Toronto. There are a few pairs of ravens the breed in western Durham region in the Uxbridge area. Also they breed on the escarpment west of Milton now.

Nevertheless seeing a Raven on the lake shore is a good sighting. usually only a handful (5) at most are recorded yearly along the lakeshore with most in Durham and northumberland regions. They can appear in any season going for a flyabout.

Now if that ivory bill comes by tommorrow please call........

I was just telling Walter earlier today that my sister saw a raven near the Rouge last winter.

Yup, it was actually three circling above my head, flying quite low, in early spring of this year.  I immediately assumed they were crows until I heard the "caw-roak" that only a raven can make!  A very cool sighting just off Old Finch Rd.

Amazing that one was at Rosetta!

I seen a raven a couple of weeks ago up in a tree near a swamp east of Lake Scugog.  This is the first time i have seen one down in southern Ontario.  This one was easily the size of a large red tail hawk  I have only seen them up in northern Ontario and Manitoba.

Here's a link to a picture of it

There have been birds at Greenwood for at least two years, now.

Nice to see.

There has been pair of Ravens nesting within a 15-20 min flight (raven speed) to the north east of Greenwood. And these could be those birds or their parents.

The Rouge Park Ravens are some of the runtiest ravens I have ever seen.In the winter they love to roam around the Durham-Scarbourgh townline area just north of Finch ave /Beare rd landfill. The same area where 'wild' Ring-necked pheasants are holding on in the GTA.

I'm not so sure... the Greenwood ravens are pretty reliably in the Greenwood area.  I wouldn't be surprised if this was a separate pair of birds.  There are a lot of hydro towers in the area, perhaps they're using one of those.
