Hummingbird at Cranberry Marsh

I had a few hummingbirds that were great at evading me. saw anywhere from 2 to 5 today. I suggest that, if you want to see hummingbirds, Cranberry Marsh is a great place to go for the next few days. the orange conical flowers they feed from are still around. they can be found on the eastern part of the Lyne Shore Marsh birdwalking loop - both the right and left sides of the path.

no luck with pictures today - lighting was mixed and my camera was grumpy. these are the best two i got. and i THINK i saw an emerald belly on one of them (those exist in Toronto?)

Great shots. If they are in the Toronto area, they are most likely ruby throated. Looks like they are feeding on jewelweed, just like they did in our backyard. Perhaps this is a good native plant to keep around for hummers - we originally just had it because it is pretty.

but where do you get jewelweed from? looks nice but the hummers (and bees and wasps, though) seemed to love it this year

I believe jewelweed is also known as touch-me-not.  Friend at work has a native Canadian garden at home; I'll check on where to get plants.

I've seen a few hummers in the Toronto area this summer but haven't had any real shooting opps. How late in the season can we hope to see them before they head south for the winter?

My resident pair quietly left a couple of weeks ago.......  :( ........ just 8 short months and they'll be back.

Time to switch feeders and get ready for the Juncos.......  :shock:

My lone guy is still around..saw him this morning.

saw nothing at Cranberry Marsh today BUT raypie apparently spotted some (i assume further south near the lake)

Two are still there this evening.  I was "trying" to take some pics.  It's a challenge, but fun.
