Yes, everyone seems to have a digital camera these days, and the real nutters are a far and few between. But if you encounter one, do something about it!
In the late seventies, I ventured down to Duffin Creek marsh with my aunt in tow to have a look for a reported great grey owl ... when we arrived, we were confronted with a scene which was almost beyond belief ... two cretins of the long-lensed variety were casting a fishing rod with a mouse on the hook and dragging it across the snow to lure the hapless strigid into "primo" posiition for their portfolios. I approached them and asked them what the **** they thought they were doing.
One of them got pretty hostile with me, but was alerted by his friend to the oncoming female in the housecoat and pink fuzzy bunny slippers, wielding a tire iron and screaming something quite rude in Gaelic. They were out of there in about three minutes.
I'm not advocating violence by any means (Margaret has severe mood swings, as you may recall), but social pressure is the only method to dissuade overly-intrusive types who interfere with wildlife for frivolous reasons.
To me, any image obtained via disruptive measures, which cause extreme stress and drains energy from wildlife is a worthless piece of trash.
So, tell them what you think. There were four police cruisers at the scene within 15 minutes, but the "Fab Foto Twins" were long gone. The charges laid against Margaret were thrown out of court after three psychiatric evaluations.
