Amherst Today (November 15)

Hello:

I was on Amherst this afternoon for too short a visit.  Saw one Snowy Owl on the KFN property.  He was sitting on the cement tank near the south shore.  Last seen sitting on the ground near a single tree on the property.  Also four hawks on the property, three were Rough-Legged and one I am not sure.

In the Owl Woods saw one Saw Whet in the pine plantation.  Was told there were Long Ears about but did not see any.  At the feeders where White Breasted Nuthatches, Downy Woodpeckers and of course Chickadees.  And one small yellow bird I don't know, but I have a photo and will try and identify it once I download it.

On the ferry ride I saw four Common Loons in winter dress (or juveniles) and many female Common Mergansers (probably - light was bad and mixed with fog).

By the way, they are still using the small ferry for Amherst so it is tight for space.  And the stop sign on CR 4 between the 401 and 33 is now a roundabout and it is confusing the locals so be careful.

Opps.  Sorry, I should have put this under Eastern Ontario.  First post jitters I guess, or just roasted from the 3 hour drive back from the island.

glad you had better luck with the owls,than we did. i guess,timing is everything.you,re righ about the fog. it hung in there for half the day.was very tough photographing anything,in those low-light conditions.

The Long-eared owls are very hard to see at times. The 1st time we went there, I was continuously flushing them silently just ahead of and above me, I didn't see any perched, and could only see them when they flushed. My wife who was walking just steps behind me never saw them. If you didn't look up at the right time, you would think there was nothing there.

i hear you kin! i,m from northern ontario,originally,timmins,to be exact,and the owls up there( great-horned,barred,and snowy),i encountered,didn,t flush easily.i was probably the first human they encountered.they would just sit there,till i left! poor birds! LOL
