I think the first one might be a common or red breasted merganser.  The second one looks to me like a mockingbird.

The first one looks like a merganser based on the long thin bill.  Very strange posture.  Did you catch her in mid dive?  The overall dark colour suggests a female Hooded Merganser, but there's not much to go on.

I agree that the second one is a mockingbird.

Awsome thanks for the fast replies  :D  The merganser I caught shaking herself after a dive. Was really strange to see her as a solo bird, the others must have been hiding in the bay across from where we were.
