Why are so many posters not including photos in their posts?

Hi,

I'm not a photographer, but I love coming to the Bird Photo Corner to browse the wonderful photos posted here. Truly an inspiration! Having said that, I have noticed that many of you simply provide links and do not bother inlcuding thumbnail photos in the posts. For me, this makes it much more inconvenient to enjoy these great photos (and to be frank I often don't bother going off site). I think it would make the forum much easier to use with more photos immediately visible. Ideally, I would only want to go off site if I wanted to see more photos from a photographer that I particularly like.

It struck me that many of you may not know that it is quite easy to include photos when posting. There was some  discussion on this a while back here. You can in fact both include a thumbnail photo and link the thumbnail to your web site, as is described here.

I suggest that the moderator of this forum considers adding a "photo posting tutorial" as a sticky.

Keep 'em coming!

one excellent poster here told me that he's not sure how to link a photo off of flickr.
i explained it, but he still wasn't cool with how to do it.
some people possibly just don't get it.

i would suggest that some others may post links so their blogs or flickr picture views increase in visit #s. that's kind of lame, but if that makes them happy, so be it.
its "inconvenient" to click on each and every picture, but hey, there are bigger inconveniences in life. :)

i assume, yogi, you,re reffering to me.i tried once, and failed, and havent had time to seriously look into it again.i,m sure i will achieve success, once i apply myself.
the links i provide, are of the pis, only, not to my gallery on "flick,r"
for those of you,who find it inconvenient,to perform an extra click, then dont! you,re not hurting my feelings!

I am not the moderator but here is a run down on how to post a pic.  I'm sure others might explain it easier.
When posting you will notice just below the subject line that it has a number of tags that you can click on.  There's a B tag to bold your text there is a u tag to underline.  At the right side you will notice Img and URL tags.  You use the image tag to have your image show up in your post.  You use the URL tag to add a web link you want someone to be able to click on and go to such as a bird identification site.
This is important  If you want to add an image tag you click the Img tag first then type your web link and then click the Img tag again.  So if you have a picture you posted somewhere either on flickr or your own website then you would click on the Img tag or button .  Notice they are different.  The first one opens the tag then you type the image link and the one at the end closes the image tag so that this website knows to use that link to show your image in your post.
If my picture was located at "http://www.daxton.ca/pics/snowyowl.jpg"
Then to have it show up in my post it would look like this
You must not put the weblink in quotes because it will not work.
In this case i have put the web link in quotes so that you can see how it should look in order to work.  If i left out the quotes then it would have posted a picture which is not there because i have not taken a pic of a snowy owl yet but i will.  Also make sure that you don't get the open and close tags mixed up.  The goes at the end.  The is the case for all tags.

I hope that helps.  Sometimes i post a weblink if i have a lot of pictures.  At the beginning of the year i took some pics of a Blue Heron starting to build a nest.  So i put them on my website and posted a link.  I use easy thumbnail creator.  I highly recommend it if you have your own webspace.  You just add your pics and it creates an entire photo website with thumbnails and photos links.  It makes things easier for people to click through and view your pictures.  Have a look but you have to click on my link to see
http://www.daxton.ca/pics/blueheron

I guess there could be a whole other session on how to crop your images, resize them and then save them so that they are the right size but still get maximum clarity once posted on the web.

I use photobucket .....very easy and straight forward.

You simply upload your photo(s) there and then copy & past the [IMG] link and post it here......that's it !!!

It nicely displays the full image (not a thumbnail)

It's exactly the same amount of work and the same procedure as posting a "flickr" link......but with the bonus of an actual photo in your post.

This has always been puzzling to me as to why more people don't post the actual photo instead of only a link, being that there is no more work involved.

Personally, I rarely click on links for photos because my rural "hi-speed" is not the best and it simply takes too long to load.

If I go to a thread and it lists a bunch of links, I simply close it and move on.....and my feelings aren't hurt either

I use Flikr and honestly don't know how to get the thumbnail posted here.  I will read through Skyviewer's notes and try next time.

I use FLICKR as well and the hard part is finding the JPG address.  I find that you have to select the photo from your photostream then from that screen, select "All Sizes" just above the image to get to the source image, then right click on the picture itself and choose "Properties".  In this pop-up will be the actual address of the photo including the ".JPG" file extension.  Copy the whole "http.......JPG" line between the designators.

Cumbersome, but always works for me,

Tom.

denis,
this is what i was trying to tell you. flickr is VERY annoying that way.
photobucket.com is MUCH easier, since it provides you with the html tags and url tags. less thinking. but i use flick for 99% of my pictures due to its community properties - i can post pics in whatever community I want and more people can randomly see my pictures. win-win....except when it comes to quick and easy posting on here.

Actually, the URL for the image is in a text field near the bottom of the "All Sizes" page.  No need to get it from the image property.  But according to the Flickr Community Guidelines, external image references should link back to the Flickr photo page.  Just the IMG alone isn't enough to comply with the guideline.  So you need to surround the IMG with a URL tag, like this:

The code to do it is like this:

Code: [Select]
[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/accwai/2917520884/][img]http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3039/2917520884_bdea2beee8_o.jpg[/img][/url]

The URL for both the IMG and URL tags can be found in the text box on the "All Sizes" page, just above the pure image link.

To all:  don't forget to unclick the "Disable BBCode in this post" option noted below whenever you're posting, otherwise you're just posting a link.
