I was up at Brock and Victoria, just east of Whitby harbour (where the avocet was nesting) at 4 PM today. among the throngs of Canada geese in the pond on the east side of the bridge (east of Whitby yacht club) were 2 red-head mergansers swimming with a common goldeneye.

Very cool - I'll have to check it out.  This area is known as Pringle Creek for future reference.  Thanks.

American Avocets don't nest anywhere close to the Whitby Harbour, they nest and breed far away in the Mid-west to Western parts of North America.  They do tend to wander and can land anywhere while migrating, this one merely stopped off for a bite to eat before carrying on his journey.

Happy Birding,
Walter  :)
