Almost silent except for some a couple of busy groups of American Tree Sparrows that were full of song. A hairy woodpecker showed up with one bunch, and there were scattered small gangs of chickadees here and there. A pair of Red Tail Hawks were circling and calling loudly. Would these birds be getting together for breeding at this time?
In between, a pair of cottontail deer burst through the bush (there are lots of them in the back of the woods). I wondered what had startled them as they were coming towards me; in a few minutes, I saw what it was: a coyote mooching along on his own. He gave me no more than a glance as he went on his way!
As I walked out by the north entrance a pair of Mocking Birds suddenly crossed the road and started in on the berries in the hedge. Are they also pairing off?
