I was strolling thru the woods when I heard his call. Walked back on the trail a bit and spotted him on a tree about 20 yds. away.
The one day I did not bring my camera. :(

Isn't that just frustrating - I'd love to get a pic of the Pileated.  I've only seen one once (very quickly).

there are a few locations almost on your doorstep which are reliable for this woodpecker.

1) oshawa creek valley between thomas st and lakeview park. a pair has nested here  for years

2) courtice: pebblestone road east of courtice road. large woods with a resident pair.

Several pairs also nesting in durham forest south of uxbridge and the ganaraska forest

We've also got at least a female in the Orono Crown lands just south of 5th Con.  Haven't heard her recently though.

I live in Bowmanville as well.  My husband and I went for a stroll yesterday and were fortunate enough to get an up close view of a female on Concession between Liberty and Centre Streets.  She was beautiful and didn't seem the least bit concerned that we were watching her.  I was standing at the base of the tree and she was about 6 feet up the trunk. And of course I only had my cell phone camera with me so the picture is terrible.  We watched her for a least 15 minutes.  

I also saw a male on Nash between Green Rd and Maple Grove - had to look twice since he was almost at ground level.  :shock:

Hi,
We got to see one this past weekend up at Nordic Wasaga Beach as we were cross country skiing...biggest woodpecker I've seen.  It was in the tree just off the trail we were on, but unfortunately it flew away further into the trees before we could get the camera out of our pockets and our gloves off :(  It was a chilly -23 degs with the wind chill.  Had never seen one before so I wasn't sure what to check for to determine if it was male/female, hopefully I'll be better prepared for next time.
