On Friday, Sept. 29, I was admiring the adult White-crowned Sparrow hanging out under the feeder with the House Sparrows and Mourning Dove. All the little birds took off, but the dove was slower. It started to move, but then all I saw was an explosion of feathers. Next, I saw a juvenile Cooper's Hawk on top of the dove. This hawk had been patrolling my yard during the week, but this was the first time I saw it catch something.
Later in the day on October 1, we visisted G. Ross Lord Dam ( Finch and Dufferin). We saw 2 wing-tagged Trumpeter Swans, which I reported to Patuxent banding centre and to Wye Marsh. There were also White-throated Sparrows, 2 Double-crested Cormorants, 1 GBH, 1 Cooper's Hawk, Brown Creepers, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 1 Flicker and an Eastern Phoebe.
