I have decided to put this topic on the Toronto Wildlife section because this has to do with ex-Toronto and Southern Ontario and is in relation to the Northeastern Coyote incidents.  Also, some of the articles in the Toronto Wildlife Section were not actual sightings.  The following mammal species used to live in Toronto and all of Southern Ontario:
American Black Bear
Eastern Cougar
Bobcat
Canadian Lynx
Grey Wolf
Wolverine
Woodland Caribou
Moose
Eastern Elk
American Bison
American Marten
Fisher
The main reasons these mammal species were extripated from Toronto and most areas of Southern Ontario was because of human persecution as these mammal species were viewed as pests, as a liability, and viewed as a threat.  Hunting also took a heavy toll on these mammal species.  Some of the mammal species I mentioned need old growth forests to survive and unfortunately many areas were cleared.  Many of these mammal species are recolonizing Southern Ontario because of preserving, creating, enhancing, and enlarging natural areas in Southern Ontario.  Also, people are more tolerating of all wildlife now.  Unfortunately, there still is human persecution of wildlife now.   Human Persecution of wildlife should be history.  Northeastern Coyotes should not be any different on our tolerance towards Wildlife.  Mammal Species are not the only group of wildlife to be extripated from Toronto and Southern Ontario.  Wild Turkeys were once gone but are making a strong comeback along with many other non-mammal species.  People should learn to live with wildlife in harmony.

Audubon's Bighorn Sheep Ovis canadensis auduboni. Habitat: North and South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska. Extinct since 1925.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bighorn_Sheep

and several other sources say the same thing.  Nothing about Toronto, Southern Ontario or even Ontario
please let us know where you get your sources from so we can see the validity of your claims.

I believe I made a mistake on the Audubon Bighorn Sheep.  I believe I made the mistake buy calling the Audubon Elk which lived in Eastern Canada the Audubon Bighorn Sheep.  Ecobirder Blogspot has made it seem like they were abundant until the 1800's by saying Canada.  I am unsure if they are just talking about Western Canada.  As for my knowledge on the rest of these animals, Toronto And Region Conservation Authority Website has the information on what the natural terrestrial system was like before urban developement.
Etobicoke & Mimico Creeks: Click on Resources and then click under Terrestrial System
Highland Creek: Click on Resources  and then click on Natural Habitats
Some of the other animals I know of were present in all of Southern Ontario but are now found in only some areas and with small populations.  The Credit Valley Conservation on Bobcats and the Niagara Escarpment having Fishers and Martens.  Another website I just found is the Halton Region Museum which talks about some of the animals that used to live in the area.  I will take Audubon Bighorn Sheep off the list.  Thanks Tyler for pointing this out.
