I believe it is a Painted Lady.
It landed at my feet at James Gardens late this afternoon.

I'm not an expert by any means, but I think it's an Eastern Comma.  Exciting to see butterflies already!

It's a compton tortoiseshell. I actually photographed eastern commas today in Bestview park. Still looking for my first 2010 mourning cloak, maybe tomorrow?!

Just returned from shooting mourning cloaks in the same area as the eastern commas were yesterday. Lots of MC's around but not a single EC, maybe later in the day? Boy, the 50D is sure different from the 30D when it comes to exposure (easier to blow out the highlites, or so it seems to me). I can now see the value of a really good photo editor, will process the raw files later.

I used the butterfly guide at enature.com yesterday and Painted Lady seemed to be the best match. I visited again today and punched Compton Tortoiseshell into their search engine. When the page came up I saw that your ID was correct.
