got lucky yesterday,and spotted this fellow hammering away at this hydro pole on scugog island.eye level,about 50 ft away,with cars flying by from both directions.i watched,and took many photos,as he hung around for at least 15-20 min.

Awesome shot Denis.
It's cool to see the size of the hole compared to the size of the bird.
No wonder these guys can drill right through and topple a tree.

First - excellent photo Denis!

Since moving to a new home near Tillsonburg, we had never seen or even knew about a Pileated Woodpecker before.
We have a pair in the woods behind our house.  We see them occasionally and hear them daily.  They are a trully awsome bird. We look for them daily.
They made a hole in the top of an old dead elm tree last fall/winter so big that when a big wind came early this year, the tree top snapped off right where the hole was.
