i was at the Spit on Friday. heard northern flickers calling and walked towards them.
i also heard rapid pecking/knocking of another woodpecker.
i turned a corner and i must have startled the bird.
it was sitting on a bird box and all i saw was its back - a cappuccino brown colour. it was probably a bit larger than a flicker.
couldn't ID the bird other than what I've given you.

i also saw a similar bird at the Brickworks last year.

any help would be great.

I'm no expert...BUT...it sounds, from your description...like a rare sighting of the Fijian Coconut Bird....but, I could be wrong.

Your choices are- Hairy, Downey, Pileated, Red-bellied, Red-headed, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and Northern Flicker.
The only one larger than Northern Flicker is Pileated.
At this time of year, the only one with a brown back is Northern Flicker.
