Well I know it’s a Dowitcher, the question is which? Looking at Sibley’s I’m tempted to lean to Long-Billed, but not confident. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated. The shot was taken this afternoon at the Blenheim Lagoons.

Thanks in advance,
Mike Irwin

It is a Long-billed Dowitcher, i found 1 earlier on hamilton mountain and had the same porblem identifying it so i'll go with what my expert friends told me how can tell Long-billed, in spring the Long-billed has barring on the sides which not see onj short-billed, also the black v's along the bottom sides of the bird in spring are definite clue to Long-billed. Also the shoulder feathers have white bottom edges, short-billed don't have this. For the final reason why Long-billed that was what was posted by a friend of mine at Blenheim ;) nice photo btw

Great photo!  It captures well the easiest and most definitive field mark for the Long-billed:  the cinnamon colour clearly extends all the way through to the undertail coverts.  Without seeing that, the ID would be (for me at least) much trickier.

Jean Iron has some useful pages for identifying dowitchers:  http://www.jeaniron.ca/Shorebirds/2010/lbdow2010.htm and http://www.jeaniron.ca/Shorebirds/2009/dowitcherid.htm

Great picture Mike.  Folks at Point Pelee were talking about Blenheim and what they were seeing.
