It was such a beautiful evening yesterday (unless you're a Penguins fan  ) that I decided to go for a quick walk in the park to see what I could find.

It was very quiet.  I saw only 4 warblers (2 Yellow, 1 Yellow-rumped, 1 Palm), no Thrushes (except Robins) and no Flycatchers.  There were some surprises though.  I met a very experienced birder who had just flushed an American Bittern near the parking lot.  Unfortunately, I didn't see it.  Neither of us had ever seen one in that park before.

A bit later I found an adult male Orchard Oriole singing loud and long near the junction of the paved paths, just west of the yacht club.  Maybe he was trying to establish territory, because there were 2 females with him and a Robin was harassing him repeatedly.  I've seen single Orchard Orioles in the park before in May, but never 3!

Finally, I spotted an odd looking flock flying high, heading roughly east.  I wasn't sure at first, but as they got closer I could see that they were 11 White-winged Scoters.

You just never know what you'll see at this time of year! :)

Yesterday (May 14) the park was teeming with activity. Near the parking lot there were several male Orchard Orioles, one of which was kind enough to pose for many photos. I saw only one female Orchard Oriole. There were so many Yellow Warblers I could not count. There were several Chestnut-sided Warblers and they also were happy to pose for a photo-session. Additionally, one American Redstart, two Yellow-rumped Warblers, two curious Catbirds, one Eastern Wood Pewee, countless Baltimore Orioles and one friendly gentleman visiting from Winnipeg. I did not even bother to check the water since I was on a warbler mission.
