.

I have a pair of Eastern Bluebirds nesting in my backyard.......I feed them mealworms everyday.

I specifically target the Bluebirds only.......and they finish them off quite quickly.

If given the opportunity......other birds such as Robins, Cardinals, Woodpeckers, Chickadees, and Nuthatches would also relish the critters.

Will dried mealworms attract these birds too?

regarding feeding mealworms to Blue birds, Interesting! My daughter is doing her thesis at  University on the effects of supplemental feeding of Tree Swallows. Since some Blue Birds moved into some nestboxes she thought she would try feeding them too, but they aren't taking the mealworms. Do you mind sharing your secret? She is currently putting them in a dish on the roof of their nestbox, but no takers.

I made a simple feeder specific for this task......by mounting a shallow container to the top of a 3 ft. rod.

Each morning I load it with about a dozen worms and walk out to the yard and stick it in the ground.

I place it beside a small maple tree that they like to perch in......approx. 20 ft. from the nest box.

I had it closer to the box at first.......but she didn't like it there and actually tried to remove it.

I also whistle a specific way every time I bring out the feeder to help them make the association.

Each day I've moved it a couple of feet closer to my house......I'm about 3/4's of the way there.

Now, I don't even make it back to the house before the female swoops in and lands on the feeder.

The male perches nearby but never comes in until she is finished (nice guy) ......he usually ends up with nothing.
