I'm guessing its a red-tail.  Large wings and head and bulky body suggest buteo, the overall feel of the bird is Red-tail to me.

Red-tail is always the obvious answer around these parts.  I was hoping that it would be something more exotic, as we saw a Merlin earlier that day.  Thank you for the reply.

in yur first image...I can see a dark belly band... I also see  5 fingers on wing tips
