Red Fox

I have been seeing this red
fox steady now for a week

but

he seems to have a time
catching the squirrels

they are too fast for him

do they often catch them

anyone??

he is Lovely!

Both myself and a fellow photog have each seen a red fox with a squirrel in their maw but I do not know what their success rate is.

Given the size of the squirrel pop in the GTA....I'm guessing the squirrels win almost always lol

Well, last nite
he/she
caught a squirrel

and oh my
he just tossed it up in the air
for a while
we were a bit of a distance

and then apparently brought it
upside the bldg to do something
hide it .. and then finally took it
to the den I guess, ravine

at this time, a smaller fox
appeared when he was tossing it in
the air, but kept a distance
this fox looked like it had a bit of a limp

I read/heard somewhere that a predator needs 100 attempts to catch prey (presumably there are some conditions ie predator is a healthy adult facing average prey density).  I don't have any other support for this estimate.  (We joke in my family that stalking garbage usually has a 100% success rate, which may account for how often it is attacked.)

Now I am feeling sorry for the fox
does it get enough to eat?

We surely can not go near it
or feed it.. anyway

Does the fox get enough to eat?
Um.  For the mum, probably yes, since she seems to have a litter.
For the pups, normally there is not enough food for all, so many of them starve to death.  After they're grown,

unless food supplies happen to be exceptional, the surviving pups will be forced to disperse into totally unknown country far beyond their birthplaces in probably futile attempts to find territories of their own.

Good thing there's that garbage available.
My trouble is that I feel sorry for all the little ones, furred, feathered or otherwise, predator and prey.

I almost never go anywhere without a camera and now I know why! A couple of days ago I opened the front door to pick up the newspaper when I spotted a red fox crossing the street headed for my backyard (even a passing motorist stopped to watch in amazement!). I raced to my backyard 'viewing' room and grabbed one of my many cameras but he must have turned around because he was gone by the time I got outside (never showed up in the yard) . I live across the street from Bestview Park and spend lots of time there but this is the first time I've actually seen a fox in this area.
