Had 10 Junko's, male and female cardinal, 2 downy woodpeckers, 3 house finches, a single house sparrow, as well as a squirrel at the feeder today.  Haven't seen the chickadee's in a couple of days, hope they're ok.

Also have seen either a sharp shinned or coopers hawk flying around the neighbourhood and dad said he saw it roosting in a neighbours tree.  I'm trying to get a photo of him and if I do I'l post it.

Cheers!

Hi Attila,

I also have had a Sharp-shinned Hawk hanging around my feeders. I saw it with a House Finch and later I found red Cardinal feathers under one of my trees. Yikes! There weren't a lot of birds at my feeder for most of the week.

But today, I had a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatches, a pair of Downy Woodpeckers, a pair of Hairy Woodpeckers, 3 Cardinals, 1 Chickadee, 2 House Finches, and 3 Goldfinches. And, I heard a male Cardinal singing, so Spring is getting closer!

Folks, you were right, as long as I keep the nijer feeder stocked here in Brampton I get lots of birds: 6 A. goldfinches daily, they look remarkably yellow. More than a dozen juncos, couple of house finches, several sparrows. Mr. and Mrs. cardinal some days. Also 4 or 5 extremely playful squirrels and a charming little rabbit who, we are pretty sure, has a home under the back deck.
The chickadees are flitting in and out of the conifers at the front of the house most days.

Haven't seen any stray feathers around....yet....   I'm expecting he'll catch a couple before the winter is up.  I was sitting out by the feeder and nothing was around so I took to calling them in and thats when the junco's and cardinals showed up.  Unfortunately they move when I try to move my camera..lol

Late this afternoon there were 3 chickadees as well as the usualy crowd of junco's and woodpeckers at the feeder.

No recent casualties around our feeders, though a redtail has been recently doing flybys. We get our usual goldfinches and housefinches at the nyjer seed feeder. Mourning doves and juncos scavenge the seed that falls to the ground. At our main feeder, we get cardinals and bluejays occasionally, but we haven't seen our usual nuthatches or chickadees this year. We do get a female hairy woodpecker on a near daily basis to our suet. No downies this year, at least as far as we know.

Here are some pictures that I managed to get...the cardinal is a little blurry but I'm moving closer to them with the chair so I'm sure I'll have some better shots in the next couple of days...

There has been an increase in the number of house finches at the feeder and the males are tending to be a little more aggressive with each other as far as territory around the feeders goes.

Love is in the air...

Also, I've been spending alot of time outside and I've noticed something:  the junco's are really timid when it comes to having people around.  Chickadees, cardinals, woodpeckers, house finches, all seem to have no problems at all with me out there taking pictures but the junco's just don't seem to want to come out to play until I go inside...

Thoughts on why?
