In light of Zed's post of the photo he took in High Park...and seeing as it's Halloween season....I was wondering how many of you believe in Sasquatch, Ogo Pogo, Nessie, Yeti etc.

I'll admit...I lean towards believing in Sasquatch b/c I want too...

As much as I'd like to believe in their existance, there's really not much substance to that fact. I've watched a lot of programs on TV about the search for such creatures but with today's modern technology and literally teams of "experts" constantly looking, I doubt they're not much more than traditional lore passed down over the years.

It is pretty much impossible for there to be undiscovered megafauna in North America.

Keep in mind that an awful lot of time and money and expert skill was involved with finding cougars in Ontario...and in the end, it came down to a few tracks and one sample of scat...nothing on film and no sightings...and we are talking about finding cougars in populated areas of Ontario...with an estimated population of 550 animals, there have been no roadkills, no pix and anecdotal sightings that may or may not be reliable.

But they actually found a den, I would say that's good evidence. It doesn't help that the cougar will see, hear and smell you long before you see, smell or hear it.

Well, there have been many reports of "finding" sasquatch nests -- I guess the difference between that and finding a cougar den is that we do now know what a cougar den looks like...and I guess it's easier to believe people who say they found a cougar den v. those who say they found a sasquatch nest...now that said, I don't believe the governement study mentioned anything about a den.

And while we're talking about credibility of eyewitnesses -- almost all reports of cougar sightings have turned out to be dogs, fishers, house cats etc. and then there is the persistent rumour of how the government (never specific which level) has released cougars to manage the deer population or the turkey population etc....everyone knows someone who knows someone who came across an MNR p/u with a cannister trailer behind it and a cougar inside...

As for detection, I guess that's part of the argument as to why sasquatch, like the cougar, is so seldom seen -- it can detect us before we know they're there.

I stand corrected -- a cougar den was in fact found.

Well recent DNA analysis on an alleged Chupacabra remains have confirmed that it was a coyote with mange...although umm...that wasn't a surprise...I  expected the government to supress the true results...the truth is still out there people !

Sorry for not responding, forgot about this thread. The thing is that people may be unlikely to know that a cougar is something to report, while the only reason not to report a sighting of bigfoot is fear of being laughed at. I know that I met a lady near Sundridge that claimed to have seen a cougar (in cottage country in summer). Chances are that it was something else, but the point is that she did not seem to believe it was a huge deal, and probably hadn't reported it. I would not be surprised if there is a photo of a cougar taken in ontario in existence somewhere that is not thought to be very important.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I doubt there is any discoveries of unique, really large animals on land left (as opposed to a new species of eg. deer similar to living species). In the ocean however...

lol....and? Was she?

Imagine my disappointment when I learned that my family members who I thought were chupacabra were really just mangy coyotes !

Seriously though...there have been many examples of animals thought to be extinct or newly discovered mammals....look how long it took us to confirm cougars in Ontario...every time there was a sighting, it made front page news...I hightly doubt anyone saw a cougar and didn't report it. It's just not that "unremarkable" no matter who you are...even in BC, people get excited when they see one.
