On Oct. 16th., my husband Glenn was working in the yard and came in to tell me to come outside to see "this really neat bird". There it was just sitting by our fence, sunning itself - our first ever sighting of a beautiful Woodcock! It stayed for about an hour and we got several great pictures, but being a newbie, we're not sure how to post without the pics being on a website. Then a couple of days later, just as I got home from work and was hanging up my coat, I looked out the front door to see a ring necked pheasant hopping across my neighbours driveway and lawn! I ran for the camera, but a car drove by and scared it into the neighbours backyard. (Two firsts for us). The following weekend a red headed woodpecker was in our backyard just picking insects out of the grass and was there again later in the week when I was home for lunch (we have seen these before). This summer, we also saw our first sighting of an Orchard Oriole in our yard and in our neighbour's tree. We would never have known what it was, except our neighbour's dad knew from having been a fruit farmer all his life and he said he hadn't seen one in years. So we felt we'd like to post about the extra abundance we seem to have. We are about 3 blocks from 40 mile creek.
