making a squirrel-proof feeder

my back yard currently has 5 squirrels scrounging and looking for food. they've destroyed my squirrel-proof feeder (ripped the metal trim and broke into it) and when they're not busy destroying the feeder, they're busy climbing all over it and preventing birds from feeding.

so i need a new solution: can i build my own squirrel-proof feeder?
something that hangs w/wire between trees?

any tips or suggestions?

A Squirrel proof feeder is one they cannot get to in any way, shape or form.  Plain and simple.  I've got 8 to 12 Squirrels most days running around.  I have a cheap gazebo feeder for them to ransack.  A lot of my seeds are separated...  Safflower for the Cardinals and House Finches, Nyjer for the Goldfinches.  Pure suet for the Woodpeckers and Nuthatches.  My Squirrels won't bother with any of these.

I did buy a metal Squirrel proof feeder for $60 and they just tore the roof right off it.  It's now held together with a couple big screws and they try to get that roof off with no luck.  Now they hang over the top and scoop seed out from the feeder.

What's working for me is that I've got a pole system...  18 ft up or so, an umbrella baffler 3/4's of the way up and that is the only thing they cannot get on.  It is far enough away from all trees and wires so they cannot jump to it.  But believe me, they still try, and contemplate, calculating from different points looking to that glorious ring feeder full of roasted peanuts.  I have to use a claw rake to bring the feeders down, which most friends of mine say they wouldn't bother...  too much hassle.

You are in for some interesting and frustrating times.  What kind of feeder do you want to put up?  What kind of seed?

Lastly, we offer enough stuff on the ground to keep them going with the couple feeders they do get into.  Our motto is "if you can't beat them, feed them".  Or give up.

Please just don't resort to that chili-pepper coated seed.  What an awful thing to do to them and I still think it must eventually hurt the birds somewhere inside their bodies.

A birth certificate shows we were born.  A death certificate shows we died.  Pictures show we live.

I posted a suggestion then (it's on page 2) which seems to answer today's question!

yeah, i asked a while back. kind of didn't love the responses i got, so i thought i would ask again.

not sure about your cone set-up. i was wondering if i could use thin metal wire (like picture frame wire) to suspend a cut-open 2-litre bottle.

Birding takes my mind off stuff and it adds good life to a tuff life. It also helps me forget about my spine pain and stress.  Laugh, eat, be merry.  Anybody with extra $ may send me some as It will permit me to travel.
