Just as an aside, the tom or "bearded" turkey (first photo) can only be hunted in the spring, but either sex can be hunted in the recently introduced fall open season. Their numbers are steadily increasing (although not a reason to hunt them, some may argue) and because they are so skittish and easily spooked when mating (spring) a very intense safety course is mandatory before anyone can receive a license to hunt them. In spring, hunters will be heavily camouflaged and will imitate their calls in order to entice the toms. The safety course is necessary to prevent those calling from being shot.
