Don't worry about what the groundhogs say next week.  I had two avian signs of spring on a walk through the Etobicoke Creek valley today:  a Cardinal in full spring song, and Downey woodpeckers drumming loud and long on the most resonant branches they could find.

Hey Brian

We visited a very snow covered Tiny Township(Saturday). First sounds when getting out of the vehicle at our place were a group of Chickadee's and a vocal

Hairy Woodpecker. It was calling continuously and banging away on tree limbs across the street. Them birds were most likely just scolding me for having an

empty feeder for two months.

I read this thread yesterday from a forum in Simcoe county. Re: Cardinal's singing

The house finches are now singing constantly, and the cardinals occasionally.

Male Cardinals singing up a storm here in Meadowvale, sighting lots of Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers and lots of squirrels - including 2 mating yesterday at Lake Aquitaine.  Geez, get a room!

Music to my ears with them male Cardinals.  Yes, Spring is coming!

Remember, as every day of Winter passes, we are that much closer to Spring.  A very simple thought of reassurance.  I don't hate Winter but do get rather excited as Spring nears.

Well, I saw my first Robin in the backyard on Tuesday February 1st.  That must be a sign!  I have seen them in Lambton and High Park all winter.  But now one Robin out of the woods surely must be as good of a sign as ol' Wiarton Willie's sign today of 2 weeks until Spring since he didn't see his shadow?   :?

I wonder about his record....did you know the first Wiarton Willie was a fur hat thrown in the snow?

Last year he saw his shadow..and we had the earliest spring on record...snow melted before end of February.

Ummmmm, you got me there.  We really had no snow last winter so I can't say.

Maybe someone should tell Willie to get it right or he'll end up a fur hat?
