Hello everybody,

I'm Mike, a newbie to the forum. I'm planning a trip to the Leslie Street Spit/Tommy Thompson Park. My main goal is to get some great photos of some American Kestrels, and some Long-Eared Owls since im a bird of prey freak   So my question is, is there any "hotspots" in the park for the Kestrels and LE Owls?

Hey Mike, I saw your site and it's great that you're into birding at your age! I've seen the kestrel hovering around several places in the park, but usually after the red footbridge over any of the open areas or perched nearby. Along the road out to the footbridge there is often a Northern Shrike perched in one of the trees as well, and while he'll probably be heading back north soon, he was still there yesterday. He's not technically in the raptor family but a wicked little carnivore nonetheless. I personally have pretty crummy luck with the LEOWs, but check the wooded areas out to each of the points and the denser brush before the bridge. Good luck!

LEOs may be gone by now. if not gone, certainly going to be hard to find.
my suggestion: PM some of the people who frequent the Spit. some of them/us are more than happy to show GOOD (read: non-invasive) birders around.

this weekend will probably be great for kinglets.
haven't seen the kestrel(s) this winter. saw the shrike once near the rear pond.
