RFI: Birding Field Guide--Australia

Can anybody recommend any good or even decent field guides for Australia (Queensland)?  I'm expecting to be completely overwhelmed.

Count me jealous, too. It is my dream to visit Australia and to go birding there. Here is a web site I found that might help you.

Hi Leslie,

I birded 5 Australian states last Sept/Oct and found the best guide to be The Slater Guide to Australian Birds by Peter, Pat and Raoul Slater. It is small enough to carry in your backpack and comes with a plastic cover, so it won't get damaged out in the field! It also includes all the relevant facts, distribution maps, full-colour illustrations and best of all - a visual index where you can quickly determine the major bird family and then go straight to the corresponding pages without wasting much time.
Australia is truly stunning, goodluck with your trip planning!

Agreed. We used this guide in Australia a few years ago and it was helpful. You will see awesome birds wherever you go. Even in downtown Sydney, in the main gardens there are lots of birds - sulfur-crested cockatoos were landing on my head and shoulders, hoping I might have handouts.
