I heard about this but had never seen it, until now.
This little one, a kinglet I think, came in to feed on the seeds, got hooked on the burrs and perished.

I have never seen that before, nature is harsh at times for sure. Thanks for sharing this.

This image has stuck with me all day... it really is the saddest thing and I feel so sorry for that tiny bird.  Can't imagine its fear and this tragedy is only one aspect of the tough life birds lead.  I hope somebody untangled the poor dear and gave him an appropriate resting place...

Zed.. where was this taken?

I saw a Kinglet with its foot caught on a thistle at Col Sam in the fall. At first I thought it was just feeding but realized it was stuck. I didn't want to stress it out but having to forcefully remove it and just as I had given enough time and was about to try and free it,....it fly away unharmed...bad end than ours

A sad sight indeed, nature can be cruel.
KPaw, I found this poor bird at Rattray Marsh. It was not easy to spot. I did not see the bird when I walked in. On the way out I noticed a burr that seemed bushier than it should be. Taking a good look I realized what had happened. The location made extracation problematic.

Wow...just wondering how often this happens. I hope not too often but, those thistles are really nasty. They are tough to remove on my clothes, I can't imagine a bird getting stuck. Poor thing.
