Haven't seen this one mentioned for awhile, so just letting everyone know that the King Eider can still be seen at Port Weller. I was there on Feb.29 around 11:30 am and found him quite easily, swimming with a group of Common Merganser. He was close enough to the East shore that I did not need a spotting scope (which was lucky since I don't own one!). He's a gorgeous mature male and well worth seeing.
Directions from the west:
QEW to Niagara Street/Welland Ave. exit
keep right at the fork to continue to Niagara Street (regional road 48); turn left onto Niagara St.
follow Niagara St to Lakeshore Rd; turn right onto Lakeshore Rd
cross the canal to Seaway Haulage Rd and turn left
follow Seaway Haulage Rd until it dead-ends at a gate, park along the side
follow the nature trail to the left and cross your fingers!
I was lucky enough to find him within the first few yards of that trail, but he was coming from further back along the canal, and then flew out towards the lake end. I wonder if he keeps doing loops of the canal throughout the day? Warm weather's on the way, so he may not linger much longer.
